America seems to be becoming the Soviet Union lately, and that isn’t American. A new initiative is that our wonderful government is putting into place is a plan to recruit a minimum of 4% of us, American citizens, to be citizen informants, or spies on Americans. This is a greater percentage than Communist controlled East Germany during the Cold War. That is scary. Supposedly, this is supposed to protect us from terrorists, but I say the government has gone too far. We have agencies like the police for a reason, to protect and to serve us! We have the FBI and CIA to protect us from inside and outside threats to our nation. We as citizens know to call 911 if there is an emergency and to contact the proper authorities if we become suspicious, but the government refuses to see this as adequate. This act of recruiting citizens as spies on other citizens is unacceptable. With the Patriot Act, which passed just after Sept. 11, law enforcement was given the right to search ones property while refusing to acknowledge the search for a “reasonable amount of time.” This new recruitment mixed with the Patriot Act and other limiting acts will spell out the end of our “Free America” as we enjoy it today! Our country had a policy that we start gathering info on people when we have a suspicion of wrongdoing; that is the right and American way of doing things. We are innocent until proven guilty. With this new land of spies, we will have people gathering information from us just because we live in America, the land of the free. This is not prevention for terrorism, this is the United Stated Government striving for power, and getting it in the name of National Security. We must act now, or Uncle Sam will control us totally. Big Brother is watching, let’s not let him control us! We as a nation can pull together and fight this, and we must.

Update Finally, someone agrees with me! House Majority Leader Dick Armey rejected a national identification card, leaving that to the states, and scrapped the program that would have recruited Americans to spy on Americans. Mr. Armey agrees that there are better ways that Americans can serve their country than being part of a mass network of citizen informants. This is an example of how our government is supposed to work. We have a proposal that is un-American, and we have people that attack the unjust proposal, and then it is rejected. This is why we should follow our drives and fight for what is right. This has been a great victory in preserving our civil liberties, and many more will follow with just a little bit of work. Update Well, there is another update on this subject. Our inconsiderate government is pushing foward the TIPS program, despite the ban placed on the program from House Majority Leader Dick Armey. This is sad, the government has gone too far! We don't need to have spys running around peeking into others buisness and trying to pin stuff on others. This plan has too many holes and is an invasion of our privacy and violates our civil liberties. This is a great way to have your neighbors tip the police and have our house searched without us even knowing. This is a huge abuse of the governments power! Citizen spying is not the government's job, it is nobodys! We must not stand for this gross injustice. We must stay united against citizen spying!
