:: Kicking the Dead Civil Rights Horse :: |

Throughout American History, some acts have been practiced by some that clearly violate the purpose of our great Declaration of Independence. Starting with the sixties, many people fought for their rights, they wanted to end the age of racism and sexism. In the Declaration of Independence, a section states that all of us, which means of every race, male or female, are created equal and endowed by their creator to certain unalienable rights. This means that all citizens of the United States have the same rights. Largely during the sixties, Civil Rights and Women’s Rights movements demanded that these rights be guaranteed and enforced. This guaranteeing of rights is truly remarkable, but I believe that some groups, surely the minority of the Civil and Women’s Rights movement, have gotten carried away.
These groups that I speak of are groups that bring back the past and try to blame it on the present. Such groups are that of African Americans and Native Americans who will and have sued our government because of past actions. These people will sue our government for things like slavery and the killing of Native Americans. These acts have clearly been halted. I don’t see any logic of African Americans trying to find retribution from our government over slavery. We have banned slavery. Slavery is non-existant in the United States. If African Americans want retribution, I say that first they should sue the African tribes-people that sold them into slavery in the first place. The sad part is that these groups have made numerous victories. I know of this first hand. I am a senior in High School and am in the process of applying for scholarships. For every one or two scholarships that are available to all students, there is one for only a certain minority. Then there are a few scholarships for just females. How is this equality? This is “reverse racism and sexism”. I have absolutely nothing against equality, actually, I am extremely for equality. Minority tyranny is what I have a problem with. Our great nation set up rules for the minority to be heard, to be equal with the majority. I do not believe that this was set up to give the minority an unfair advantage. I thought that the idea behind equality is that there are no races, besides the human race. Of course, all cultures must be respected, to preserve equality, but what baffles me is how minority groups can justify making themselves superior, in the name of defending their rights to be equal. If you are being suppressed segregated, or otherwise having your rights violated, it is your right and responsibility as an American to yell “foul” and take action. The action that is unacceptable is to attempt to break equality by making yourself or your group an unfairly powerful mass that defeats our constitution and supposed way of life. Also, don’t point the finger at someone as being evil and him or her needing to repay you because of something that happened a very long time ago. I’m sorry, but I don’t see it right for someone to have to compensate someone else because one of their ancestors violated one of the accuser’s ancestor’s rights. I find it to be ludicrous that our government would even consider paying a people retribution for other people’s actions. All I ask is that you think next time you fight for your rights, are you truly promoting equality? If you are fighting for equality, by all means fight and fight hard, I am totally behind you, just make sure that you are not violating anyone’s rights in the end. |
